Komatsu

The Komatsu plant in Candiac, Quebec, required a solution for direct part marking on their heavy duty components that would still be readable after being spray painted. The problem they had experienced in the past was that other making systems produced a mark that, when painted, filled in and became unreadable.

Komatsu went with MECCO's SuperFast portable unit to keep their heavy duty components readable after painting and in harsh environments.

Creating a Deeper Mark

Komatsu looked to MECCO to solve their part marking application needs and purchased a 100mm x 17mm SuperFast portable unit with a N20 marking head. The combination of the SuperFast portable dot peen marker and N20 head produces one of the deepest marks in the industry and is survivable even after the final spray paint coating.

Komatsu found that MECCO was the only vendor that could achieve sufficient mark depth.

Simplifying Data Input:

MECCO provided a bar code scanner for data input. The bar code scanner ties-in with the keyboard and it outputs keyboard data.

  1. The operator scans the printed VIN bar code
  2. The information enters the SuperFast as keyboard text (in edit mode)
  3. After marking is complete, the next VIN may be scanned and marked

Objectives Achieved

  • Mark human-readable VIN numbers on frame & components of heavy construction equipment
  • Identification marks made deep enough to be painted without diminishing readability
